Botanical Name:Spearmint (Mentha spicata)

Sources: Spearmint is a bright green hardy perennial herb native to the Mediterranean. The leaves are finely serrated with varied pink or lilac flowers. The fresh flowers are steam distilled to produce the oil. At this time, the United States is the major producer of spearmint oil with smaller quantities being produced in Europe.

History: Spearmint was used in ancient Greece to scent bath water and was reported to cure STDs'. It also had a reputation during medieval times for healing sore gums and whitening teeth.

Therapeutic Properties: Antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic for the digestive system, astringent, carminative, decongestant, digestive, local and topical anesthetic, stimulant and restorative, and stomachic. Spearmints aroma is reminiscent of the more popular peppermint oil, but much milder, with a lower menthol content. For this reason, it is a popular choice when treating children.

Botanical Name:Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)

Sources: Eucalyptus or Gum Trees are native to Australia and Tasmania. They are rapid growers and one of the tallest trees worldwide reaching almost 300 feet tall. Eucalyptus plantations are found in many countries and the majority of harvest is established from Australian seed. At present, 25 eucalyptus species of 600 are used commercially. The fresh blue-green leaves are extracted by steam distillation to produce the oil.

History: Eucalyptus is a Greek word defined as ”well covered” which refer to the membrane-like cover around the flower bud. Australia eucalyptus groves are named ”blue forests” due to the blue mist produced by the eucalyptus trees essential oil. Baron Von Muller, a German botanist, was the first to suggest the disinfectant qualities of eucalyptus leaves.

Therapeutic Properties: Antifungal, antineuralgic, antiseptic, antiviral, decongestant, deodorant, expectorant, insecticide, and stimulant.
