Spike Lavender (L. latifolia)
Lavandin (L. intermedia)
Maritime Lavender (L. stoechas)
The main producer of this beautiful herb is France. The best quality oil can be steam distilled from the flowers, but the flower stalks can be used as well.
Lavandin is a hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender. It is best suited for use in the fragrance industry since it yields double the amount of oil.
History: The botanical name Lavendula is derived from the Latin word ”lavere”, meaning to wash. It was known to be used by the Romans as a bathing herb and was eventually introduced to England by the Romans.
