Botanical Name:Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)

Sources: Native to the Mediterranean region, lavender is a much loved herb and the most widely used of aromatherapy oils. There are approximately 30 species worldwide of the ”Lavendula genus.” The four main species of this fragrant evergreen shrub are :

True Lavender (L. angustifolia)

Spike Lavender (L. latifolia)

Lavandin (L. intermedia)

Maritime Lavender (L. stoechas)

The main producer of this beautiful herb is France. The best quality oil can be steam distilled from the flowers, but the flower stalks can be used as well. Lavandin is a hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender. It is best suited for use in the fragrance industry since it yields double the amount of oil.

History: The botanical name Lavendula is derived from the Latin word ”lavere”, meaning to wash. It was known to be used by the Romans as a bathing herb and was eventually introduced to England by the Romans.

Therapeutic Properties: Lavender is a versatile herb valuable for numerous health complaints and suitable for all skin types. It has analgesic, antidepressant, antiseptic, aromatic, bactericidal, hypotensive, emmenagogue, insecticide, nervine, sedative, and vulnerary qualities.



Botanical Name:Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia)

Sources: Vanilla grows as a vine. The fruit of vanilla is called the bean and contains the vanilla aroma when ripened. True vanilla is expensive due to the large amount of plant material necessary to produce just a small amount of oil.

History: Vanilla planifolia is the main species of vanilla and is harvested from and largely produced in Madagascar. There is limited recorded history on vanilla.
