This soap is reminicent of a unique heavy earthy aroma. Patchouli imparts a hypnotic scent.
Botanical Name:Patchouli (Pogustemon cablin)
Sources: Patchouli is a perennial shrub with large green furry leaves and small whitish flowers tinted with a pinkish-purple color. This aromatic herb is native to India and Malaysia. The largest production of patchouli oil is performed in Indonesia. It is also cultivated in India, Philippines, East and West Indies, Malaysia. Brazil, Japan, and China.
In India, the plant is recognized as ”Puchaput” a word derived from the Hindustan word patch (green) and ilia (leaf). The dried leaves of patchouli must be aged and fermented before the distillation process to produce quality patchouli essential oil.
History: Patchouli was commonly used to prevent moth infestation during transportation of fine shawls and carpets to Victorian England. The characteristic aroma of patchouli had to be present in merchandise or it could not be sold.
